Karate $10 Karate - United Fun |
What should I do? (karate)?
I have been practicing shitoryu karate for 3 years now in a very traditional and prestigious school. Recently I was given the offer to train with the national team, and also, continue training in my dojo. The national team trains kumite ALOT but under the WKF rules, not the traditional way I have been taught. They are lighting fast, they know how to score points, but their technique sucks ( for myself, a traditional) they are only taught to score points and win the match. The only reason I would consider going with them is to get more kumite practice with new sparring partners, and to train myself to be faster like them. The problem is, I don´t want to learn their WKF techniques because my main goal in training is mainly self defense. For example, when they score a punch they give there backs to their attacker and start screaming for the judges to see. That can get you in a lot of trouble in the streets. Anyways, Should I join the national team?
I think you should consider it especially if you want to learn more about the sport facet of karate and that type of fighting. You are correct in that type of fighting requires lightening fast speed and any hesitation on your part will quickly find you down in the score and losing the match. You have to think, act, and react quickly so in that aspect it is great for dealing with street situations. Hesitation and the inability to act or react quickly in street situations will get you hurt or worse usually.
However there are aspects beyond this like what you refer to that are different from sport karate and self-defense and even fighting full contact for that matter, which I have also done. That does not mean though that because you fight in sport karate you are going to develop all these bad habits that are going to make you ineffective in a street situation or hamper your ability to fight full contact.
There are some aspects that should and do carry over from one to the next while there are other aspects that should not and are you a good enough martial artist to know what those are and when they should or should not be I think is the question really?
Playing the judges and the rules is one aspect that you learn to do in sport karate in order to compete at a high level and you can bet all the other fighters will and are doing this as well. You can do that in full contact also but not in the same way as what I mention here. An example of that would be fighting more aggressively the last 15 seconds of a round to try and steal a close round on the scorecards from the judges.
However there are no rules in street or self-defense situations and a good, well trained martial artist is going to adapt to that situation and dealing with it on that level like they should rather than as if it was a sport karate match or even a full contact match with rules and a referee and such.
