How is Boxing or Muay Thai better than Taekwondo for self defence?
Boxing just teaches punches
Muay Thai just has its punches, elbows, knees and elbows
and they both are sport focused
Taekwondo is a martial art. It teaches all that the above two do plus blocks, leg sweeps, some grappling and self defence techniques against weapons, chokes and grabs. And yes there is sport too but they still teach the self defence in the curriculum.
The problem with boxing and muay thai for self defense is that you are use to an opponent throwing punches with weighted gloves on. Your reaction time for punches are not realistic. Also, the whole idea of wrapping your wrist before sparring is unrealistic. You develop punching techniques that may break your wrist when they are not wrapped. That's what happened to Mike Tyson during a street fight.
I don't know about your TKD school, but for all TKD schools I have seen, you are not allowed to punch in the face. That kind of defeats the purpose of sparring to develop self-defense. Punching to the face is the first thing an opponent will go for in a fight. A good self-defense martial art should prepare for that.
